Postgraduate Diploma in Seed Production Science & Technology
Programme Overview
Lokbharati University for Rural Innovation (LURI) offers a one-year Postgraduate Diploma in Seed Production Science & Technology, designed to build strong foundational and applied competencies in seed production, quality, processing, and regulation. The programme combines rigorous theory with hands-on practice—particularly attuned to the needs of agriculture and rural innovation.
Key Features
- Duration & Structure
Full-time, one academic year, divided into two semesters. - Blend of Theory & Practice
Course work includes classroom lectures, lab sessions, field visits, and a hands-on component via internship or research project. - Modern Laboratories & Facilities
Access to well-equipped seed technology labs, quality testing facilities, storage and processing units, breeding/genetics labs etc. - Expert Faculty & Industry Exposure
Instruction by experienced academic staff and visiting experts from seed industry, government agencies, and research institutions. - Focus on Rural & Sustainable Seed Systems
Emphasis on appropriate technologies, organic seed production, regional crop varieties, and regulatory compliance for rural contexts.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the programme, graduates will be able to:
- Demonstrate understanding of seed structure, development, physiology, and germination processes.
- Plan and manage seed production systems for field, horticultural, or regional crop types, ensuring genetic purity and quality.
- Apply seed processing and storage techniques to maintain viability and reduce losses.
- Understand national/international seed certification, legislation, and standards, including organic seed production.
- Evaluate seed quality via testing procedures (purity, germination, vigour) and employ quality assurance.
- Conduct project-based work and internships; communicate findings via reports and seminars.
- Contribute to seed systems that are sustainable, rural-appropriate, and aligned with community/agricultural needs.
Admission, Eligibility & Assessment
- Eligibility
Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture or allied life sciences (or related discipline); or equivalent with a minimum aggregate mark (e.g. ~50%, to be confirmed).
Infrastructure & Pedagogy
- Laboratories & Field Facilities
Seed testing lab, processing unit, storage with controlled environments, breeding/genetics lab, biotechnology facilities. - Faculty & Mentors
Faculty with specialization in seed science, plant breeding, genetics, agricultural biotechnology; plus guest lectures by seed industry/regulatory experts. - Teaching Methods
Lectures, lab practicals, field trips, case studies, workshops, peer learning, seminars; research/internship component to integrate learning. - Rural Immersion & Relevance
Field visits to rural seed producers, cooperatives, government seed certification centers; interaction with farmers; emphasis on crops important locally.
Career Prospects & Pathways
Graduates of this PG Diploma can pursue careers such as:
- Seed technologist / specialist in seed production companies.
- Quality control / assurance / certification roles in seed labs or government agencies.
- Regulatory / compliance positions related to seed legislation.
- Seed processors or storage facility management.
- Research or extension roles in agriculture / seed systems.
- Entrepreneurship: setting up small-scale seed businesses, organic seed production, community seed banks.
- Further studies: M.Sc / Ph.D in Seed Science & Technology, Plant Breeding/Genetics, Agricultural Biotechnology.
